"The Real Slim Shady" is a song by Eminem, released on April 18, 2000, as the lead single from his third studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP, through Aftermath and Interscope Records. Written by Eminem alongside Dr. Dre, Tommy Coster, and Mike Elizondo just hours before the album's final copy was due, the song was a late addition meant to introduce the record and poked fun at pop culture figures of the time such as NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera. It reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Eminem's biggest hit up to that point, and was later ranked at number 396 on NME's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The track shared its production team, Dr. Dre and Mel-Man, with the same album's later single "Cleanin' Out My Closet."
