"This Is How We Do It" is a song by Montell Jordan, released in February 1995 as the debut single and title track from his debut studio album, This Is How We Do It, through Def Jam Recordings. Co-written by Jordan and Oji Pierce with an interpolation from Slick Rick's "Children's Story," the track became Def Jam's first R&B release and Jordan's signature song, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Its music video, directed by Hype Williams, depicted a house party and captured the feel good, South Central Los Angeles atmosphere described in the lyrics. The song remains one of the defining R&B and new jack swing anthems of the mid 1990s.
