Mariah Carey – Hero

"Hero" is a song by Mariah Carey, released on October 18, 1993, as the second single from her third studio album, Music Box, through Columbia Records. Written and produced by Carey with Walter Afanasieff while he was simultaneously scoring the 1992 film Hero, the song was originally intended for Gloria Estefan before Carey, at the urging of Sony executive Tommy Mottola, kept it and adjusted the lyrics for herself. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and went on to be performed at major public events, including America: A Tribute to Heroes in 2001, Live 8 in 2005, and Barack Obama's inaugural ball in 2009. The song became a staple of Carey's live shows, typically closing her concerts, and followed her earlier chart topping single from the same album, "Dreamlover."
