"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" is a song by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, recorded live on December 12, 1975, at C.W. Post College in Greenvale, New York, and first released commercially in 1981 on the children's charity compilation In Harmony 2. A cover of the 1934 holiday standard written by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie, Springsteen's version borrowed its chorus refrain from a 1963 recording by the Crystals and featured a bass baritone vocal exchange with saxophonist Clarence Clemons. The recording later appeared as the B-side to Springsteen's 1985 single "My Hometown" from Born in the U.S.A., and In Harmony 2 went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children in 1983. It became one of Springsteen's most enduring seasonal releases, remaining his best selling single track download in the United States each holiday season.
