Eric Donaldson – Land of My Birth

"Land of My Birth" is a song by Eric Donaldson, written by Winston Wallace and released in 1978 as his winning entry in that year's Jamaica Festival Song Competition. It was one of five festival titles Donaldson claimed across his career, following his breakthrough win in 1971 with "Cherry Oh Baby," a song later covered more than thirty times by artists including the Rolling Stones and UB40. Built around a repeated declaration of national pride and belonging, the song became a kind of unofficial anthem, carrying patriotic themes through simple, direct lyrics rather than elaborate imagery. Decades later, it resurfaced widely across social media in late 2025 as Jamaicans in the diaspora rallied support following Hurricane Melissa, with its message repeatedly cited as capturing the depth of that response.
